1. Knowledge is Power. Do your research. Make sure the lifestyle you choose is right for YOU. No one else can decide that for you. Arm yourself with knowledge and know what you’re getting yourself into. CONTINUE your research throughout! If something doesn't feel right, chances are someone has gone through the same thing. Utilize the wonderful internet we have (for more than just porn). You shouldn't have to pay someone else to help you lose weight. Be your OWN nutritional adviser by doing the research/legwork and I think you will be much more likely to stick with it.
2. Decisions, Decisions! Decide up front that you can do it and will stick with it. Get into the right frame of mind before taking the plunge. Also, make sure the timing of that decision works with any upcoming plans (e.g. wedding).
3. Get Support. Find a community or friend to help you on your journey. You don’t have to do it alone. Also, you don’t need your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/roommate/fiance (etc.) to do it with you, but you do need his/her support. Decide that it’s okay for him/her to eat his/her way and you can eat your way, but make sure he/she is going to accept your decision to make the lifestyle change for yourself. He/she loves you and should champion your decisions.
4. Be realistic. Don’t say that you will never again drink a coke, or eat a slice of cake, or make a poor eating decision. You likely will. Just know that when you do make that decision you will be armed with the knowledge of how it will affect you in the short and long term.
5. Get Active. A diet without exercise is an exercise in futility (and you can quote me on that). That doesn't mean you have to go to the gym every day. Structured exercise is great, but just increased activity is a step in the right direction. To truly make a healthy lifestyle change, I think that increasing your activity level will help you be most successful.
6*. Lifestyle Change vs. Diet. Did I just say something about a diet? I did! But a ‘diet’ is simply a particular selection of food that is habitually eaten. Your dog is on a diet… your cat is on a diet… you are currently on a diet. What you want to do is make a lifestyle change. This might include modifying your current intake and therefore changing your ‘diet’ to be more healthy. Just remember that ultimately what you are getting into has to work for the long term as well as the short term... or I don’t think it will work at all.

Betan is not a blogger
I decided to blog one summer (circa 2011). After about 3 months of serious posting it turned into the occasional picture of food or nail art. [Isn't that what Twitter is for? Yes. Yes it is.] Then, my sweet husband deleted the domain account. Blog be gone! Six months later - when I decided to post something again, I was furious. But I was blogging!! Maybe not so much if it is 6-12 months between posts... I forgive him.
In February I decided to blog again and made a blog on blogger where it could be stagnant for years and not get deleted. I started a wonderful post. Two sentences in it seems I saved my progress and never published it.
In April I decided to blog about doing NaNoWriMo camp. I made a post that day and actually published it! Houston, we have progress. A month later I posted again to admit I had taken on too much and wasn't able to meet my goal toward the novel.
In May I decided to start a blog about cooking, specifically because having just started keto I wanted a place to put some keto friendly recipes and pictures about food. I made a post that day and actually published it... with pictures and everything!
In August I decided to start a blog where I can take all the old posts and put them on THIS blog and it will look like I actually post more than once a year. Then I can delete the other failures. Brilliant or Banal? You be the judge.
What makes me think this time will be any different? I don't really. So, If you're bored and want to use the internet for something other than porn.... read on.
